Grayson Carter and Son started small: One man and one tractor. Since 1995 we’ve grown our workforce and our capabilities. We’ve kept the hunger that made us a great small business and the ability to provide the resources you need when and where you need them. We’re a much bigger company now, with a growing team, a stable of state-of-the-art equipment and a workforce seasoned in handling large and important civil construction projects.
We’ve been a part of North Alabama’s growth over the years, supporting the technology and building
boom with our work. We’re glad to support the mission-critical operations on Redstone Arsenal and we’re proud of our work paving the way for the expansion of industry in our region.

Our Story
In 1995, Grayson Carter started with a single 1987 Dresser TD15C dozer. Through dedication and hard work, he built a reputation for getting the job done right. The financial freedom that came from the series of jobs on The Arsenal allowed Grayson to grow his operation. The company expanded into underground utility installation and then, in 2006, began working with subdivision developers.
From the start, employees have been an important part of the growth of Grayson Carter and Son. You’ll hear employees say that “Everybody pretty much knows everybody.” And it’s a family business – Halston Carter started working with his dad when he was 11 and he has had a major impact on the growth of the company. Halston introduced new technology to the equipment and Grayson Carter and Son were some of the first in the region to adopt technological upgrades that made their work more precise and increased production. After Grayson retired, Halston took over leadership of the company.
Under Halston, the company has continued to grow with over 225 employees and job sites all over the region in municipal, government, residential, and commercial construction. Grayson Carter and Son is proud to be a part of the community in Athens, Alabama where they are headquartered. They are also proud to be a part of the growth happening across North Alabama. Employing experts and using top of the line equipment and the latest technology lets Grayson Carter & Son Contracting produce an excellent work product safely and efficiently.
